Names shown in black are those dying in the period October 1951-54, which was considered “Active Service” and for which the Naval General Service Medal or the General Service Medal were issued. Shown in blue are those dying in the period Oct 1954 -56 during which time the Base was dismantled and some guerrilla activity continued. Those in magenta died between November 1950 and prior to October 1951 during which period there were a considerable number of terrorist attacks. There are a large number of Commonwealth burials recorded in the period 1948 to November 1950. Although these appear to be listed as plane crashes, natural causes, accidental etc. rather than directly due to terrorist activity, they occur at 2 or 3 a week and are predominately in the ranks of the vulnerable units:- RASC, Pioneers etc..

There was an air crash at Luqa airport 17th May 1953 involving “S” Troop in transit for Suez. A Valetta aircraft (70 Squadron) force landed on the grass when its aileron jammed, hit the runway control caravan and burst into flames.

Plot 18 Row C Grave 36 A week before he died Lieutenant Hirst rescued a swimmer in difficulties in the Gulf waters south of Suez.
