How to wear your Medals

There has been a lot of talk about how, when, where and which medals should be worn.

I wrote to the   "Medals Consultant to the Royal British Legion"

                                           Ashley R Tinson

                                    His reply is shown below.

Dear Mr Hickman,

Whether in uniform or civilians it is normal to wear medals at Remembrance and other parades linked to military service.

In uniform they are worn normally above the left pocket. If any kind of top coat is worn they are not displayed.

In civilian clothes they are worn in a similar place to that for uniform and in this case, if an overcoat or mac is worn, they may be worn on it.

Unofficial medals may not be worn in uniform and should not be worn in civilian clothes. If they are worn they must not be put on the official bar and are usually worn well down the left side under official medals.

I assume you know the order of wear; it is basically campaign medals in order of date of participation, Golden Jubilee Medal, Accumulated Campaign Service Medal then Long Service & Good Conduct Medal.

                                         Ashley R. Tinson,

Honorary Medals Consultant to the Royal British Legion.

18th Nov 06

I will let you know if and when I get a reply

Hi Alan,

While on holiday in Redcar I had a visit to the  Kirkleatham Museum.

As a member of the Suez Veterans Association I was very upset that the Suez Medal was not on display and no mention of the active service between 1951 and 1956 when we had 1,460 casualties

Could you please add this medal to your display in a tribute to all those we left behind.
